Première étape sur l’ile du Sud, les sounds et notamment le French Pass où nous passons une après-midi extraordinaire : une route magnifique sous le soleil pour atteindre le petit village où nous nous baignons en compagnie d’une bonne grosse raie et à proximité d’un requin avant qu’un gentil groupe scolaire ne nous offre un kayak avec lequel nous partons en mer rejoindre une colonie de dauphins avant de finir par un superbe coucher de soleil dans les fjords! Passage rapide à Nelson le lendemain et retrouvailles express avec Ben, Sasha et Tanja avant de prendre la route pour Kaiteriteri Beach où nous passons l’après-midi sur la plage. Direction la Golden Bay avec un bout d’Abel Tasman Track pour Hugo et Elsa pendant que je fais passer le contrôle technique à Yannick. Nous prenons ensuite la route vers la Cote Ouest mais nous bifurquons finalement à travers l’impressionnant Arthurs Pass pour éviter les grosses pluies prévues à l’ouest et rejoindre la cote est au niveau de Christchurch! Le centre-ville étant toujours condamné suite au tremblement de terre de fin février, nous ne nous attardons pas et passons la journée dans la péninsule de Banks où nous visitons rapidement Akaroa avant de rentrer à Springfield où nous avions fêté la veille les 200 000kms de Yannick ! Apres un arrêt pluvieux au lac Tekapo, le soleil est de sortie le lendemain et nous apprécions les superbes couleurs de l’automne combinées au bleu turquoise du lac ! Nous partons ensuite pour le Mont Cook avec d’innombrables arrêts photos sur la route et un beau coucher de soleil sur le Mont Cook depuis le Kea Point. Grosse journée de marche le lendemain avec vue sur le Tasman Glacier, le lac Tasman et ses icebergs et les fake Blue lakes, puis un peu après midi, nous voila partis pour 1000m d’ascension vers la Mueller Hut où nous allons passer la nuit. Neige sur la fin de la rando, pas toujours évident pour grimper, mais nous arrivons finalement sans encombre à la hutte frisquette où nous passons malgré tout une très bonne soirée à jouer aux cartes et discuter avec les autres randonneurs. De gros nuages devant le Mont Cook en fin d’après-midi nous empêchent de voir le soleil se coucher, mais un lever de soleil magnifique nous attend le lendemain matin sur le plus haut sommet de Nouvelle-Zélande ! Descente bien négociée et apéro bien mérité au parking… Puis nous prenons la route de Dunedin avec petite escale au barrage Benmore où la encore, les couleurs de l’automne sont incroyables ! De retour sur la cote est, nous passons voir les Boulders (gros rochers polis sur la plage) à Moeraki avant d’aller observer quelques yellow-eyed penguins de très près. Le vent un peu trop violent nous décourage cependant un peu plus tard dans l’attente des blue penguins au bout de la péninsule. Nous rentrons donc déguster un bon Fish n Chips chez Brian. Le lendemain, bon petit dej préparé par Brian puis journée shopping à Dunedin avant d’aller supporter les Highlanders contre les Cheetahs (rugby Super 15). Catlins le lendemain avec beaucoup de chutes d’eau impressionnantes, de la foret, du vent et des moutons ! Puis nous arrivons à Milford Sound pour découvrir les énormes fjords dans la brume. Direction Queenstown ensuite où nous passons une journée tranquille avec petite marche, disc golf, bonne glace, gros hamburger, casino et pub. Bonne journée de route jusqu’aux glaciers le lendemain avec quelques arrêts en route (Arthur Point, Coronet Peak, Karawau Gorges, Wanaka, Haast Pass) et une fin de journée avec marches jusqu’au Fox Glacier et autour du lac Matheson pour voir le reflet du Mont Cook. Mercredi, demi-journée sur le glacier Franz Josef munis de crampons, expérience exceptionnelle ! Hokitika, capitale du jade, pour ensuite terminer par rejoindre Christchurch par le Lewis Pass. Passage rapide chez Tim, mon hôte CS en novembre, avant d’aller passer la soirée et la nuit chez un autre ami rencontré en novembre. Vendredi matin, c’est déjà la fin ! Je dépose Elsa et Hugo à l’aéroport de Christchurch… 4 semaines géniales passées à une vitesse folle, merci encore d’être venus les Québécois 😉

Road map

First step on the South Island were the sounds and especially French Pass where we spend an awesome afternoon: a beautiful road under the sun to reach the small village where we bathed with a stingray around and close to a shark before that one offered us a kayak, with which we went to sea to join a colony of dolphins all jumping around us, before finishing the day with a beautiful sunset in the fjords! Rapid stop to Nelson the next day and quick meeting with Ben, Sasha and Tanja before taking the road to Kaiteriteri Beach where we spend the afternoon. We headed then to the Golden Bay where Hugo and Elsa hiked a part of the Abel Tasman Track while I did the WOF for Yannick. We then took the road to the West Coast but we finally took the impressive Arthurs Pass to avoid the heavy rains forecast in the west and arrived on the east coast not far from Christchurch! The CBD is still closed due to the earthquake in late February, so we did not last too long there and spent the day in the Banks Peninsula where we visited Akaroa before returning to Springfield where we celebrated the 200-000kms of Yannick! After a rainy stop at Lake Tekapo, the sun came back and the next day and we appreciate the beautiful colors of fall combined with the turquoise blue of the lake! Awesome! Then we went to Mount Cook with countless picture stops on the way and a beautiful sunset over Mount Cook from the Kea Point. Big hiking day the next day with views of the Tasman Glacier, Tasman Lake and its icebergs and the fake Blue lakes, and then a little after noon we’re off for 1000m of ascent to the Mueller Hut where we planned to spend the night. Snow on the end of the hike, not always easy to climb, but we finally arrived safely at the hut where we spend a chilly but very good evening to play cards and chat with other hikers. Some heavy clouds in front of Mount Cook in the late afternoon prevent us from seeing the sunset, but a magnificent sunrise awaited us the next morning on the highest peak in New Zealand! Way back well negotiated and a well deserved drink waited for us at the car park … Then we took the road to Dunedin with a short stop at Benmore Dam where again, the autumn colors are amazing! Back on the East Coast, we went see the Moeraki Boulders (large smooth rocks on the beach) before observing a few yellow-eyed penguins really close. Once in Dunedin, the wind was too violent and discouraged us to stay watching the blue penguins at the end of the peninsula. So instead we enjoyed a good Fish n Chips at Brians. The next day started with a good breakfast prepared by Brian, then shopping in Dunedin before going to cheer for the Highlanders against the Cheetahs (rugby Super 15). Catlins the next day with a lot of impressive waterfalls, rainforest, wind and sheepssss! Then we arrived at Milford Sound to explore the impressive fjords in the mist. Road to Queenstown then where we spend a quiet day with little walk, disc golf, good ice, big burger, casino and pub. Good day’s drive to the glacier the next day with a few stops along the way (Arthur Point, Coronet Peak, Karawau Gorges, Wanaka, Haast Pass) and at the end of the day walk up to Fox Glacier and around Lake Matheson to see the reflection of Mount Cook. Speed tourism! Wednesday, half day hike ON the Franz Josef glacier, extraordinary experience! Hokitika then, capital of jade, and finally finish by joining the Lewis Pass to Christchurch. Rapid hello to Tim, my CS host in November, before going to spend the evening and the night at another friend met in November. Friday morning, it is already the end! I dropped Elsa and Hugo at Christchurch airport… Awesome four weeks which went way too fast, thank you again for coming, Quebecers 😉
